Nov 5th (UK) ...

GUY FAWKES
It's all to celebrate a building being saved from being blown up and thus stop the death of King James 1st of England,on 5 November 1605. All masterminded by Robert Catesby. In the past (it seemed to stop in the UK in the 80's) a Guy Fawkes effigy would make and paraded around town by children on the anniversary of the conspiracy asking for a small donation using the term "Penny For The Guy". In recent years this has attracted controversy as some regard it as nothing more than begging. Whilst it was traditional for children to spend the money raised on fireworks, this is now illegal, as persons under 18 cannot buy fireworks or even be in possession of them in a public place. Fawkes was ranked 30th in the 2002 list of "100 Greatest Britons", sponsored by the BBC and voted for by the public. He was also included in a list of the 50 greatest people from Yorkshire.

Guy Fawkes Night
Also more so known as Bonfire Night, or Fireworks Night is an annual celebration on the evening of the 5th of November. It is celebrated primarily in the United Kingdom, but also in former British colonies including New Zealand, parts of Canada), and parts of the British Caribbean. It celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot in which a group of Roman Catholic conspirators, led by Robert Catesby and including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Palace of Westminster on the evening of 5 November 1605. In the U.K., the celebrations take place in towns and villages across the country. They involve fireworks displays and the building of bonfires, on which "guys", or dummies, representing Guy Fawkes, the most infamous of the conspirators, are traditionally burnt. In the United Kingdom, there are several foods that are traditionally consumed on Guy Fawkes Night...black treacle goods such as bonfire toffee and parkin, toffee apples, and baked potatoes, which are wrapped in foil and cooked in the bonfire or its embers. Yum! In Australia, Guy Fawkes Night is mostly known simply as Bonfire Night and bears little connection to its original purpose. Celebration of Bonfire Night has died down due to the banning of fireworks in most states and territories to prevent their misuse.
